April 29th, 2007, 10:29 p.m. - Please forgive all the military puns (are those puns? Aren't puns supposed to be funny? Sorry)
I was going to write this whole rant about how awful and ridiculous this book is, how it's badly paced and poorly edited, how Gareth is one of the most irritating characters I've ever read, how no one is likable, how the cites are supremely annoying, and how the entire thing is pompous, self-indulgent, and pretentious, but then I realized that I've already wasted enough of my time on it (511 freaking pages, people) and I don't want to expend any more energy even thinking about it. So I'll just say don't read it. Really. You'll thank me.
Every time Anne Lamott comes out with a new book of "thoughts on faith," I wonder how she can have more to say. I'm always pleasantly surprised to learn that she has plenty more to say. Not only does Lamott have some great insights about faith and life in general, she's refreshingly honest, especially about her own flaws. She admits that she's screwed up in the past, but she's not ashamed; rather, her flaws make her who she is. If only all writers could be as forthright as her.
