August, 2015

August 1st, 2015, 2:31 p.m. - You have to be kidding me

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 18 perform and two go home: Asaf over Burim? REALLY? Shut up, judges. Rating: 3 boos from everyone for that horrible decision

4:06 p.m. - Now I understand the mixed reviews

23. The Nurses (Alexandra Robbins)
This book is frustrating, both because of the content (nurses get treated like dirt) and because of the style. Plus, why not focus on a more diverse group of nurses? Robbins only features white female ER nurses in the same area. I need a better sense of what nursing is like across the spectrum.

Up next: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (John Berendt)

August 8th, 2015, 1:10 p.m. - Oh, Nyle, light of my life

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 16 perform and two go home: Yay, Asaf's gone! And Jaja is still awesome! I think I'm rooting for her more than anyone else. Rating: 4 watches

America's Next Top Model – "The Guys and Girls Make It to Hollywood": NYLE. Best. I was also surprised at how likable I found Lacey. The two of them are easily my early favorites. Rating: 4 crowns

August 9th, 2015, 5:41 p.m. - File this one under Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction

24. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (John Berendt)
I was expecting something totally different – a murder mystery &ndash& but instead got something that's part character study, part travelogue, part legal case study, part...I don't know what. It goes in a few too many directions, but it's ultimately a good story.

Up next: The Library at Mount Char (Scott Hawkins)

August 15th, 2015, 2:17 p.m. - Sorry you got thrown to the wolves, Yorelis

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 14 perform and two go home: I wish both Yorelis and Neptune could have stayed, but Neptune definitely earned his spot. Not sorry to see Alexia or Kate go; Alexia never did anything for me, and I'd reached my limit with Kate. I'm on the Jaja/Jim/Virgil train! Rating: 3 "ugh, Tyce"s uttered by me

America's Next Top Model – "The Girl Who Walks Away": Ava is...kind of likable? I'm surprised. She's a better model than I thought she would be. Still gunning hard for Nyle, though. Rating: 4 sleeping bags

August 22nd, 2015, 2:22 p.m. - WHO IS NOT VOTING FOR MEGZ??

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 10 perform and two go home: Virgil and Comfort were so cute together in their routine. I could have watched ten more minutes of that. I'm hoping for a final four of Jaja, Jim, Virgil, and...actually, I don't care about the second stage dancer. Rating: 3 mattresses

America's Next Top Model – "The Guy Who Gets Shipped Out": Ava continues to rise in my opinion. I loved her picture, too. She may end up surpassing Lacey as my favorite female competitor. Rating: 4 strands of lights

5:08 p.m. - The coal in her heart

25. The Library at Mount Char (Scott Hawkins)
You should read this book if you like:

But don't read this book if you like:

  • Dogs

Up next: I Regret Nothing (Jen Lancaster)

August 28th, 10:19 p.m. - Thanks for another good one, name twin!

26. I Regret Nothing (Jen Lancaster)
A fun read, as always. Jen Lancaster would be fun to spend a day with.

Up next: Delicious Foods (James Hannaham)

August 29th, 2015, 1:18 p.m. - UGH, TYCE

So You Think You Can Dance – Top 8 perform and two go home: For the past couple weeks, I've been able to guess exactly which dancers will be in the bottom and which will be sent home. Fortunately, my favorites have all remained safe. Hopefully, that will remain true through the top four. I badly need a Jaja/Jim/Virgil final four (with the fourth TBD. Gaby, I guess). Though it's unfortunate that that means Megz will have to go. Rating: 4 cheers for Derek using a song called "Two Men in Love" for his solo, because this show's history of pretending gay dancers don't exist is ridiculous

America's Next Top Model – "The Girl Who Has a Close Shave": I love it when the models in the bottom two are both annoying, so I don't care which of them is eliminated. Good riddance to Stefano, though. Go be a misogynistic jerk somewhere else. Hadassah has a better chance of redeeming herself. (Also, stop saying they shaved half of your head. It was more like a sixth.) Rating: 4 model teardroplets, as Ms. J calls them
