August, 2019
August 2nd, 2019, 8:09 p.m. - I was really excited about this one, but...
32. The Chain (Adrian McKinty)
Up next: Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant (Joel Golby)
August 3rd, 2019, 2:12 p.m. - "She thinks I'm Kristen Bell!" "She will be sorely disappointed"
So You Think You Can Dance – "Final Cut – The Top Ten Girls": I was thrilled to see Mariah and Stephanie get through, and Anna definitely earned her spot. But I'm not sold on Sophie and Madison yet. Nazz should have made the finals instead. I don't get all the hype about Madison. I haven't seen anything from her that the others haven't brought to the table as well. Rating: 4 boos for Sumi not quite measuring up
Jane the Virgin – "Chapter 100": It was...fine. There was always going to be a happy ending, so my expectations weren't high. Everything worked out. It was okay. I was satisfied, but not satisfied satisfied, you know? Rating: 4 bus posters
iZombie – "All's Well That Ends Well": Now, THIS left me satisfied satisfied. Blaine and Don E. got what was coming to them, Enzo was taken down with a nice twist, and all the main characters survived and got happy endings. It was a happy ending for the fans as well. Rating: 5 touching assists from a flight attendant and her cop brother
August 10th, 2019, 2:06 p.m. - I still think Jerrod was better than some of these guys, but whatever
So You Think You Can Dance – "Final Cut – The Top Ten Guys": I would have picked Nathan over Ezra, but the other four choices were great. I'll be rooting the hardest for Bailey, Benjamin, and Stephanie this season. Which means at least one of them will be cut first. Rating: 4 rounds of applause for Jasmine, because I still love her so much
August 11th, 2019, 4:28 p.m. - What do you mean, I finished it? WHAT DO YOU MEAN, THERE'S NO MORE LEFT TO READ?
33. Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant (Joel Golby)
Up next: Do Not Become Alarmed (Maile Meloy)
August 17th, 2019, 2:12 p.m. - A supposedly fun thing Nora and Liv will never do again
34. Do Not Become Alarmed (Maile Meloy)
Up next: Gingerbread (Helen Oyeyemi)
August 18th, 2019, 3:08 p.m. - [insert "you should have gone to/with Jerrod" joke here]
So You Think You Can Dance – "Top 10 Perform": I'm so glad they criticized Eddie all throughout the audition process, barely let him through, and now...continue to criticize him. It's so much fun to watch. Rating: 4 eye-searingly bright dresses Sophie had to dress in
August 24th, 2019, 11:50 a.m. - Not at all what I expected
35. Gingerbread (Helen Oyeyemi)
Up next: The Last Widow (Karin Slaughter)
August 25th, 2019, 4:17 p.m. - Welp, I said one of my favorites would inevitably be cut first...
So You Think You Can Dance – "Top 10 Perform, Round 2": America, you suck for not loving Stephanie as much as I do. We're in a fight now. Rating: 4 mattresses
August 31st, 2019, 2:08 p.m. - Bonus: Cathy Linton with a shotgun
36. The Last Widow (Karin Slaughter)
Up next: The Swallows (Lisa Lutz)
This was even more twisted than I expected, and I didn't buy how some of the characters acted. I'd been looking forward to this book for months, but it didn't live up to my expectations at all.
Golby uses the perfect mix of humor and touching moments. I didn't want it to end. In fact, I'm genuinely sad it's over.
I shouldn't have ignored the reviews that said this was a disappointment. It's at least 50 pages too long and most likely ticked off the entire country of Costa Rica. I have...regrets.
Honestly, this was disappointing. It's pages and pages of nothing happening, then something small happening, then more...nothing.
I spent the entire week looking forward to any minute I could spend reading this. Anyone who says it's a thrill from start to finish is right (though being cliché). Now where is my movie version starring Amy Adams and Chris Evans?
