January, 2024

January 12th, 2024, 6:29 p.m. - Remind me never again to start off a year with a huge book

1. Black River Orchard (Chuck Wendig)
An apple cult? That's a new one. What other weird stuff is in Wendig's head?

Up next: Killing Me (Michelle Gagnon)

January 21st, 2024, 1:20 p.m. - Nowhere near thrilling enough for a thriller

2. Killing Me (Michelle Gagnon)
I was with it at the beginning, but it dragged on and I rarely felt any urgency. Gagnon should have gone for the twist that was teased toward the end.

Up next: A Madness of Sunshine (Nalini Singh)

January 28th, 2024, 12:01 p.m. - No one ever murders ugly women, I guess

3. A Madness of Sunshine (Nalini Singh)
Waaaay too many characters, and a long stretch where very little happens. Not a good combination. Also, Singh doesn't introduce an important piece of the plot – the killer's motive – until way too far into the narrative for anyone to figure things out. I don't have high hopes for the Singh book I have on hold at the library.

Up next: Five Bad Deeds (Caz Frear)
