July, 2016

July 2nd, 2016, 11:34 a.m. - "What would the crows think?"

17. All the Birds in the Sky (Charlie Jane Anders)
I wasn't completely sold on the plot going in, so I was surprised by how much I liked it. Then it started to go downhill until, towards the end, I was actually mad. Too much stuff thrown together that could have been a lot better.

Up next: Shrill (Lindy West)

July 3rd, 2016, 3:21 p.m. - Do I want to know the punchline of Tiffany's lemon joke? Probably not

UnREAL – "Treason": Rachel vs. Quinn is weird. I like it better when it's Rachel and Quinn vs. someone else, like Chet. How long until there's some disaster they have to work together to fix? Probably not long. Rating: 4 shots

July 9th, 2016, 1:36 p.m. - CARL LUMBLY!

UnREAL – "Infiltration": This means they're finally going to write out Jeremy, right? Please? Because he needs to go to jail. Also, I know I was all excited about Ioan Gruffudd coming on the show, but I already don't like his character, so I'm done with him. We don't need another Quinn. Rating: 4 hidden cameras

July 15th, 2016, 7:58 p.m. - I want to file a complaint! This book is too short!

18. Shrill (Lindy West)
I'm determined to get West, Jenny Lawson, and Allie Brosh all in one room for the best conversation in history.

Up next: Big Little Lies (Liane Moriarty)

July 16th, 2016, 2:16 p.m. - "She was obnoxious but that was really sad"

UnREAL – "Casualty": I am honestly shocked that no one was shot and no one was called any racial slurs this week. Good job, Alabamans! Rating: 5 pregnancy tests

Mr. Robot – "eps2.0_unm4sk-pt1.tc": No one helped Gideon! Jerks! Anyway, I've realized that this show is exactly my style and aesthetic. I hope this season is able to keep clearing the bar it set last season. Rating: 4 uncooperative smart houses

July 23rd, 2016, 2:07 p.m. - "I know. That's very weird, too"

UnREAL – "Ambush": I don't even know where to begin with this episode. Jay said it all when he told Rachel this wasn't her story to tell. This wasn't the show's story to tell either. We didn't even get to see Darius and Romeo after the shooting – everything was from the white characters' perspective, giving us the white characters' reactions to what happened. The whole thing was a huge misstep. Rating: 3 Bentleys

Mr. Robot – "eps2.1k3rnel-pan1c.ksd": I forgot to mention it last week, but I'm so happy to see Craig Robinson this show. Well, really, I'm happy to see him anywhere he pops up. He and Grace Gummer are my favorite parts of this season so far. Rating: 3 Adderall

July 25th, 2016, 6:47 p.m. - Oh, calamity

19. Big Little Lies (Liane Moriarty)
I liked this a lot more than I expected to. Great characters, some nice twists, and a perfect mixture of humor and drama. I'm definitely going to read more of Moriarty's books (and how nice that one is coming out tomorrow!).

Up next: The Last One (Alexandra Oliva)

July 30th, 2016, 2:19 p.m. - B.D. WONG! That is all

UnREAL – "Fugitive": So Coleman's a horrible person, too. Great! Anyone else? Tiffany? Darius? Ruby? Rating: 3 canes

Mr. Robot – "eps2.2init1.asec": I will take a season of just B.D. Wong, Grace Gummer, and Craig Robinson, thank you. Rating: 3 chess pieces, because that particular metaphor certainly hasn't been done to death, no, siree!
