June, 2011
June 1st, 2011, 11:13 p.m. - I heart Brandon
"Remember to Let Her Into Your Heart"
June 3rd, 2011, 6:57 p.m. - Apologies for the obvious title. I'm already in vacation mode
June 11th, 2011, 2:18 p.m. - Le beach week book roundup
13. It (Stephen King)
14. Shine (Lauren Myracle)
Up next: My Korean Deli (Ben Ryder Howe)
June 12th, 2011, 7:53 p.m. - Two, two, two weeks in one!
The Killing - "I'll Let You Know When I Get There": Belko is creeeeeeepy. And I still don't know who killed Rosie. Shouldn't there be, like, clues and stuff? Rating: 3 pictures of the Larsens
So You Think You Can Dance - New York, Salt Lake City, and Los Angeles auditions: Wow, we barely saw any bad dancers. It's like this isn't a reality show at all. I have very few complaints about the dancers sent through, though I'm not sure I see the strengths the judges saw in Natalia. Still, I can't argue with her passion for dancing. Rating: 4 former contestants who randomly popped up
The Killing - "Missing": I'm kind of ticked that there was no progress on the main plot of the season in this episode, but I did like it. They gave two of the strongest actors on the show some scenes where they got to show how strong they are. But this might have worked better earlier in the season, when we weren't counting down to the last chances to wrap up the story. Rating: 4 cigarettes
So You Think You Can Dance - Vegas callbacks and the top 20 perform: Despite the loss of Annie and Brandon, two of my early favorites, and Professor Lock, a later favorite, I like the top 20. They're all very strong. I may have a little crush on Nick Young; more as the situation develops. Rating: 4 tiny cop outfits Iveta probably shouldn't have worn
June 15th, 2011, 11:13 p.m. - If Nick were ten years older or I were ten years younger...
June 17th, 2011, 8:48 a.m. - In case you couldn't tell, I wrote the bumper before the episode ended
June 19th, 2011, 7:50 p.m. - Is that really proper police procedure, Linden?
The Killing - "Beau Soleil": The ending was creepy, but I just don't think Richmond is the killer. My money's on Gwen being involved in some way. She's sleeping with Richmond, so she'd have access to his computer. Plus, her father is Charles Widmore, and you can never trust that guy. Rating: 3 accusatory e-mails
So You Think You Can Dance - Top 20 perform and two go home: We're wimping out already? Come on, guys. You know how the show works. Just get rid of Robert and Miranda. They're the weak links. Rating: 4 heart attacks I almost had when I thought Nick was in the bottom three
June 22nd, 2011, 11:58 p.m. - Sorry, Carrie Fisher, Mommy has new babies now
June 24th, 2011, 8:49 a.m. - Boooooooo, America! Boooooooooo!
June 25th, 2011, 12:16 p.m. - And then I started crying
The Killing - "Orpheus Descending": I guess I get why people are upset about the ending, but not why they're SO upset about it. Some people think they deserved more from the writers. Uh, the writers are trying to tell a story. Let them. Chill out. It's a TV show. Take a break. Eat a cookie (TM Lisa). Of course, I can say that because I liked it. It was a cliffhanger, and it did what a cliffhanger is designed to do: It surprised me and made me want to know what happens next. Before this episode, I was looking for a reason to watch next season. Now I have one. Rating: 4 fake photos
So You Think You Can Dance - Top 20 perform again and four go home: Noooooooo, not Nick! Take Robert instead! Nick doesn't say "woo!" all the time! Excuse me, I'm going to go sit in the corner and rock back and forth for a while. Rating: 3 briefcases
5:57 p.m. - Now I want some Chessmen
15. My Korean Deli (Ben Ryder Howe)
Up next: Fallen (Karin Slaughter)
June 29th, 2011, 11:13 p.m. - Too much kissing
Beep-beep, Uncle Stevie. I was with you until the sex. You know what I'm talking about.
I imagine this is what Winter's Bone is like, with more gay-bashing and less squirrel-skinning.
Howe was an editor at the Paris Review when his Korean-American wife decided she wanted to buy her mother a deli. Running the deli quickly became a family affair, and threw New Englander Howe into a world he'd never experienced. He writes about the struggles the family faced trying to stay afloat in Brooklyn, as well as cultural differences, the stress of living with people you work with, and the awesomeness of George Plimpton. Highly recommended.
