June, 2018

June 1st, 2018, 6:16 p.m. - A 560-page X-Files episode

21. The Outsider (Stephen King)
The writing is typical King, but he approaches the story from a different angle than usual: It starts out as a crime/mystery novel, and it's unclear for a while how the supernatural figures in. My only complaint is that there's too much exposition. Just put everyone in one room and explain everything all at once so we don't have to keep reading about it, please.

Up next: Sing, Unburied, Sing (Jesmyn Ward)

June 2nd, 2018, 1:26 p.m. - "Is it hard to be bad?" "Not if you practice"

Killing Eve – "God, I'm Tired": I figured season 2 would involve Eve and Villanelle working together to bring down the 12, but I'm all in for more episodes of the two of them playing cat and mouse. Can Irina come back, too? Rating: 5 smashed bottles of champagne

Westworld – "Phase Space": This was a big letdown after last week. We need more Maeve and less Dolores. Rating: 3 hearts

June 8th, 2018, 9:23 p.m. - Aww, Kayla

22. Sing, Unburied, Sing (Jesmyn Ward)
Wonderful writing, but it should have all been from Jojo's point of view, because Leonie was AWFUL and Richie was underdeveloped.

Up next: Lab Girl (Hope Jahren)

June 9th, 2018, 2:07 p.m. - "If we survive this, I'm going back to dental school"

Westworld – "Les Ecorches": I thought I was doing a fairly good job of keeping track of all the timelines. This week, that went out the window. I'm going to have to stop worrying about it, or I'm going to break something in my brain. Rating: 4 Bernard copies

So You Think You Can Dance – "Auditions No. 1": Alexis came to win, y'all. I'll be keeping an eye on her. Rating: 4 pairs of heels I can't believe Estranja danced in, when I can barely walk in them

June 16th, 2018, 2:10 p.m. - Hey, Emmy engravers, it's spelled Zahn McClarnon

Westworld – "Kiksuya": My favorite episode not just of the season but of the whole series. Terrific acting, wonderful story, and compelling for the entire hour. More like this, please. Rating: 5 bullets that somehow still haven't killed William

So You Think You Can Dance – "Auditions No. 2": Looks like Hannahlei came to win, too. Watch out, Alexis! We're going to have a rumble! Rating: 4 reversed prosthetic legs

June 17th, 2018, 8:55 p.m. - I'm not science-y, but I liked it anyway

23. Lab Girl (Hope Jahren)
Jahren is a great writer (she studied English before she went into science), and her research felt really accessible. I can see why this was on so many "best of" lists in 2016.

Up next: Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore (Matthew Sullivan)

June 21st, 2018, 8:08 p.m. - Dumb title, though

24. Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore (Matthew Sullivan)
I really enjoyed this, though a) the connection between Joey and Lydia's past is a one-in-a-million-chance thing, and b) there were so few suspects that I figured out who the Hammerman was pretty early on. Still, Sullivan is a great writer, and I'd definitely read more from him.

Up next: The Elizas (Sara Shepard)

June 23rd, 2018, 1:25 p.m. - Happy Father's Day to everyone except William

Westworld – "Vanishing Point": Hey, it's Sela Ward! Too bad she didn't get to do any scenes with Evan Rachel Wood, who played her stepdaughter on Once and Again. That was great casting. Rating: 4 "profiles" hidden between books

So You Think You Can Dance – "Auditions No. 3": A third contender has entered the competition: Emily. Good luck rising to her, Alexis, and Hannahlei's level of competition, everyone else. Rating: 4 times Vanessa told two 24-year-olds they were adorable (tone it down, Hudge)

June 28th, 2018, 10:25 p.m. - The pieces are there for a good book, but...

25. The Elizas (Sara Shepard)
So very...not good. I regret reading this.

Up next: IQ (Joe Ide)

June 30th, 2018, 1:28 p.m. - "Seriously, what f&$%#*@ door?"

Westworld – "The Passenger": They need to quit it with the oversized episodes. But I commend the show for coming up with a way to bring back all the dead characters – just rebuild them! I'm guessing the next season won't take place in the park, though. Rating: 4 rounds of applause for Tessa Thompson's masterful Evan Rachel Woods impression (excellent facial expressions)

So You Think You Can Dance – "Auditions No. 4": Contender #4 is here: Arcadian. Sir, your name is dumb, but your talent is not. Rating: 4 pairs of little orange shorts I hope Arcadian never wears again
