So spooky and atmospheric. I can't believe this is by the same person who wrote the ho-hum Magic for Liars. This one is going to stick with me for a while.
Not quite as good as The Appeal (which, granted, set a pretty high bar), but similarly, it's one you want to read again once you know the ending, just to see how it all fits.
I liked this a lot, but too much in the second part happened "off-screen." There were also way too many characters and too much going on that didn't have anything to do with the plot. Maybe I was expecting a thriller when that wasn't really what Makkai was intending.
This was so much fun. McAllister said she was inspired by Russian Doll, but this is more like the X-Files episode "Redrum." Excellent twists that I didn't see coming, and the pacing was basically perfect. I'm already seeking out more of her books to read.
