May, 2017
May 1st, 2017, 6:08 p.m. - Thanks for the skull on the cover. I enjoyed sleeping with that by my bed
13. If We Were Villains (M.L. Rio)
Up next: I Found You (Lisa Jewell)
May 6th, 2017, 1:18 p.m. - "An unfortunate werewolf incident." "A werewolf shot him in the head?" "...It's not impossible"
Brooklyn Nine-Nine – "Moo Moo": I liked the way they did this episode, with the necessary serious stuff tempered by some comedy. It's an extremely important subject, and I commend the show for addressing it at all. My only problem was that they had Jake and Amy talking to the girls about it – that should have been left to their parents. Rating: 4 stuffed cows
Speechless – "P-R-Prom": Another important subject that I'm glad a comedy addressed. I liked all the plots this week, and would have loved even more of the Maya/Jimmy/Kenneth stuff. Rating: 5 meat tenderizers used as gavels
Modern Family – "All Things Being Equal": Hey, let's end an episode about women's rights and how we should support each other by having Gloria use a misogynistic slur against another woman! All right! Rating: 3 flat tires
Supernatural – "Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes": I think I said it before, but it's still true: I would watch a spin-off with Max and Alicia. Also, I was excited to watch Kendrick Sampson (Max) in an episode of The Vampire Diaries two hours after this episode aired. Rating: 4 wineglasses Dean doesn't know how to hold
May 8th, 2017, 6:31 p.m. - British slang is fun
14. I Found You (Lisa Jewell)
Up next: The Hate U Give (Angie Thomas)
May 13th, 2017, 1:12 p.m. - I just need Terry Crews dancing on a continuous loop
Brooklyn Nine-Nine – "Cop Con"; "Chasing Amy": First things first: I am thrilled that the show has been renewed, because I wasn't sure it was going to happen. I didn't like this week's first episode all that much, but I thought the second one was great. There are no weak characters on this show, and that's just one of the many things I love about it. Rating: 4 sombrero roofs
Speechless – "M-A-May-Jay": This show was also renewed, but I was so confident about it that I didn't even worry. It's another show full of great characters, and there's little about it that isn't likable. More people need to watch it. Rating: 4 buttons J.J. finally undid on his own
Modern Family – "Alone Time": Dylan's married! That's insane! Now can Haley get back together with Andy? I miss him. Rating: 4 accidentally punctured tires
Supernatural – "There's Something About Mary": I'm ready for this season to be over. I'm so bored. Rating: 3 dude, I don't even care enough to think of something
May 15th, 2017, 6:09 p.m. - "I didn't know a dead person could be charged in his own murder, you know?"
15. The Hate U Give (Angie Thomas)
Up next: Today Will Be Different (Maria Semple)
May 20th, 2017, 1:25 p.m. - "Stop yelling at me! I saved the day!"
Brooklyn Nine-Nine – "Your Honor"; "The Slaughterhouse": Yay for L. Scott Caldwell, who is welcome to come back anytime! Yay for Jake/Rosa stuff! Boo for the boring Amy stuff in both episodes, but I guess we can't have everything! Rating: 4 dropped pens
Speechless – "C-A-Camp": I got bored. Sorry. At least the show will have 22 episodes next season to impress me again. Rating: 3 souvenir T-shirts from the Miami airport
Modern Family – "The Graduates": Did they tape this episode before or after Rico Rodriguez's father died? Because if it was after...hoo boy. Rating: 4 graduation robes borrowed by a stripper
Supernatural – "Who We Are"; "All Along the Watchtower": I was disappointed in most of the season, and the penultimate episode didn't do a ton for me (minus Dean's "I hate you" monologue), but I liked the finale. Can they find a way to bring alternate-universe Bobby to the real world? P.S. I will believe Castiel is dead when Misha Collins confirms it himself. Rating: 4 really cute murals Kelly (RIP) did for the baby
May 23rd, 2017, 11:04 p.m. - "We all want to give up. You don't need Jesus for that. Look at me. I've given up all on my own"
16. Today Will Be Different (Maria Semple)
Up next: The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley (Hannah Tinti)
May 27th, 2017, 1:24 p.m. - "Women can be drug dealers, too. Hashtag I'm with her"
Brooklyn Nine-Nine – "The Bank Job"; "Crime & Punishment": Cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool. Rating: 4 blond wigs
May 31st, 2017, 6:18 p.m. - Another victim of Keep Using Characters' Full Names Syndrome
17. The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley (Hannah Tinti)
Up next: The Last Night at Tremore Beach (Mikel Santiago)
Now here's a book that lives up to all the rave reviews. I could read a hundred more pages of this story. (Or a sequel. The ending leaves an opening for a sequel. Just saying.)
This is a good, solid mystery that unfolded a lot differently from how I expected. I will have to check out some of Jewell's other books in the future.
Thomas' writing could use a little polishing, but that's my only problem with this book. Everything else about it was fantastic. The characters are some of the most fully developed I've ever read. Thomas' voice here is powerful, and I hope she inspires others to tell similar stories.
I was hesitant about this book, since I wasn't sure the premise would work, but I really enjoyed it. It's interesting – everyone said Where'd You Go, Bernadette was funny, but I thought it was more sad than anything else. This one, however, is funny.
Guys, maybe...change your identities? So no one can find you? Come on.
