May, 2020

May 2nd, 2020, 2:14 p.m. - "Everyone, look innocent"

Westworld – "Passed Pawn":Enrico Colantoni playing a villain is so weird. He's Keith Mars! He's the world's best dad! I'm sad he and Tessa Thompson didn't get to have a scene together, since they were both on Veronica Mars. Anyway, Aaron Paul is going to try to destroy the world, and Ed Harris is going to try to top him. See you next week! Rating: 4 memory-altering liminal drugs

Killing Eve – "Meetings Have Biscuits": I like the new cast additions, though they need to do a better job of showing us why Dasha's around. There's nothing in her conversations with Villanelle that we couldn't get out of her discussions with Konstantin. Rating: 4 talking bears

May 7th, 2020, 7:54 p.m. - Great concept, not-so-great execution

18. Chosen Ones (Veronica Roth)
I really, really wanted to like this, but it just didn't give me what I wanted. Full disclosure, though – if there's a sequel, I'll probably read it.

Up next: Take Me Apart (Sara Sligar)

May 9th, 2020, 2:20 p.m. - "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon"

Westworld – "Crisis Theory": I'm more interested in what this episode sets up for next season than I am in what happened in the actual episode. Rating: 3 cheers for the brief return of Lawrence

Killing Eve – "Still Got It": I guessed Dasha's plan ahead of time, which means I'm thinking like a sociopath, and that can't be good. Or maybe I'm just thinking like a thriller writer. Either way, yes, Villanelle, the mustache is dead. Rating: 4 bus-shaped cakes (lots of buses this season, huh?)

May 14th, 2020, 5:31 p.m. - The current 4.5-star rating is spot-on

19. Take Me Apart (Sara Sligar)
This grabbed me right from the beginning and kept me interested the whole time. The ending is a little anticlimactic, but the rest pretty well makes up for it. Add another name to my read-everything-by-this-author list!

Up next: Fleishman Is in Trouble (Taffy Brodesser-Akner)

May 16th, 2020, 2:16 p.m. - As Villanelle herself would yell, "BORING!"

Killing Eve – "Are You from Pinner": That was bad. Really bad. I want that "Crocodile Rock" scene erased from my memory Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind-style. Rating: 2 pirozhkis

May 23rd, 2020, 1:16 p.m. - "You don't have to do this. I already know you're scary"

Killing Eve – "End of Game": HOW IS NICO STILL ALIVE?? Just kill him already! At least they're finally using Irina in a good way. Maybe what I'd hoped for at the end of season 1 will happen at the end of this season instead – she and Villanelle will team up as murder buddies. Rating: 4 bowling strikes

May 24th, 2020, 11:52 a.m. - Was I supposed to feel sorry for Rachel? 'Cause no

20. Fleishman Is in Trouble (Taffy Brodesser-Akner)
Parts of this worked, parts of it didn't. For example, that it was narrated by a character who wasn't even present for most of the book. Also, I hate the character-writes-a-book-about-this-topic-ooh-what-if-it's-actually-this-book trope. HATE IT.

Up next: Pretty Things (Janelle Brown)

May 30th, 2020, 2:01 p.m. - "Heroes only get the girl in Hollywood"

Killing Eve – "Beautiful Monster": I have no idea how the season is going to end, and I'm okay with that. Other than the Villanelle-only episode, this season has been fun. I still think Dasha hasn't been a good addition, though. They should have done more with the Villanelle/Konstantin relationship instead. Rating: 4 uneaten omelets

May 31st, 2020, 11:54 a.m. - Drawback: The constant misuse of semicolons. It's painful

21. Pretty Things (Janelle Brown)
I'll be honest, I started reading this with low expectations, since I couldn't get into Brown's previous book. She wildly exceeded my expectations. Read this if you want to know how to pull off a plot twist. There were a couple that really caught me off-guard.

Up next: Lakewood (Megan Giddings)
