So the good news is that The Amazing Race is coming back. Soon. Very soon. Too soon. That's the bad news - it's coming back on November 4th. That's 13 days from now, by the way. Oh, and CBS has absolutely no information out on the teams, which leaves me fewer than 13 days to write a preview article (which I can't do now because...well, there's nothing to preview) and memorize names.
Smooth, CBS. Real smooth.

I loved Jacobs' The Know-It-All, in which he documented reading the Encyclopedia Brytannica, and I liked The Year of Living Biblically even more (as you can tell by how quickly I read it). Jacobs spent a little over a year living the Bible as literally as possible (with a few exceptions). He quickly found that it took over his entire life and way of thinking. It also inspired some thought-provoking questions, which I think everyone would do well to consider: do we do things because our religions or spiritualities tell us we should, because we want to, or because we think they're right? If we don't believe something will be meaningful, can we convince ourselves that it is just by doing it? If an agnostic prays, who or what exactly is he or she praying to? And does that prayer make any difference?
Okay, when you write a book named after a character, you should probably introduce that character sooner than 281 pages into the story. Especially if she's the most interesting character in the book.
Sad. And beautiful. And I don't know what else to say.
I love thrillers, but I'm sometimes picky about them. Cain's novel about a female serial killer, the cop who was almost her last victim, and a journalist stood out to me after reading the reviews because it's so different from most thrillers. Cain is a great writer, and though the story was at times nothing special, overall I liked the book. She's very good at writing three-dimensional characters who are memorable without being quirky and realistic without being stereotypical.
