October, 2018
October 6th, 2018, 11:56 a.m. - Most stressful road trip ever
41. Pieces of Her (Karin Slaughter)
Up next: Then She Was Gone (Lisa Jewell)
October 7th, 2018, 3:23 p.m. - "We cannot afford to hang out by mistake"
Modern Family – "Kiss and Tell": Maybe Dylan's the character who will die? Because...why else bring him back? Stop trying to make Dylan re-happen, people. It's not going to re-happen. Rating: 4 unknown reasons for getting the family together
The Good Place – "The Brainy Bunch": Maybe Trevor only works in small doses, because I didn't like this episode that much. More Gen, more Doorman, less Trevor. That works for me. Rating: 3 guns used as restaurant pagers
Speechless – "L-O-N-LONDON (Part 1)": Ray's plot was dumb, but everything else was great. Especially Dylan and Kenneth freaking out over the royal family together. Rating: 4 interrupted bus tours
October 13th, 2018, 2:10 p.m. - "Do you know how to use it?" "Uh, stab 'em with the pointy end?" "Pretty much"
Modern Family – "A Sketchy Area": Dan Levy! What a horrible underuse of Dan Levy! Also, I didn't know a guy could just walk into a classroom off the street and take over teaching. Rating: 3 confiscated ping pong balls
Supernatural – "Stranger in a Strange Land": Keeping Mark Pellegrino around as his original vessel (Nick? Is that his name? It's been so long) is a really interesting idea. It was also fun to see Sam in charge, since Dean is usually the one calling the shots. Also: Dang. Jensen Ackles looks hot in Michael's clothes. Rating: 4 new villains again killed in the first episode of the season
The Good Place – "The Snowplow": Larry Hemsworth and Blake Beartles were funny. The rest was...just there. Rating: 3 cupcakes that aren't binding you to anything, Eleanor, so just eat one
Speechless – "L-O-N-LONDON (Part 2)": Unlike Dan Levy, John Cleese was used the exact right amount and in the exact right way. I'd love to see an episode where Maya and her parents are all in the same place at the same time. Rating: 4 phones left behind at Jimmy's new BBF's (British best friend) place
October 14th, 2018, 3:22 p.m. - It's original, I'll give Jewell that
42. Then She Was Gone (Lisa Jewell)
Up next: Baby Teeth (Zoje Stage)
October 20th, 2018, 2:01 p.m. - "If you had to rough me up and take me hostage, I'm sure you had your reasons"
Modern Family – "Torn Between Two Lovers": Ugh, Haley shouldn't be with either Arvin or Dylan. She should be with Andy, and you know I'm right. Rating: 4 heart costumes
Supernatural – "Gods and Monsters": Wait, that's it? No more evil Dean? I'm actually disappointed! Oh, wait, Jody's coming next week. I'm no longer disappointed. Rating: 4 childhood pictures of Kelly (that scene was really sweet)
The Good Place – "Jeremy Bearimy": Nihilist Chidi was awesome. This was the most I've ever enjoyed William Jackson Harper, and I've always enjoyed him a lot. Rating: 4 pots of chili with Peeps and M&Ms
Speechless – "I-N-INTO THE W-O-WOODS": Who knew that Ray's goody-goody nature was like a secret superpower? I wonder if they'll actually follow through with Dylan joining student council. That could be...dangerous. Rating: 4 full-size candy bars
October 21st, 2018, 3:37 p.m. - Clearly not my kind of book
43. Baby Teeth (Zoje Stage)
Up next: All These Beautiful Strangers (Elizabeth Klehfoth)
October 27th, 2018, 2:08 p.m. - "He created a sport that was a cross between dodgeball and horseshoes, and everyone died"
Modern Family – "Good Grief": Dede was on my shortlist of possible deaths, and made the most sense, since her death affects the most people. Pam would have also made sense. Really, though, the most important part of this episode was that JIMMY TATRO CAME BACK! Rating: 4 sandwiches Jay bought that Lily ate
Supernatural – "The Scar": Jody! That is all. Rating: 4 seconds between when I said, "Maybe that's Kaya" and we saw that it was, in fact, Kaya
The Good Place – "The Ballad of Donkey Doug": The actor playing Donkey Doug did so great with matching Jason's mannerisms. I hope both Pillboi and Simone come back sometime. Rating: 4 puppies that would definitely ease the pain of a breakup if I were being dumped
If I hadn't known Slaughter was the author, I wouldn't have guessed it. This is very different from her usual stuff – but definitely not in a bad way. It's well paced, and she lets out just a little bit of information at a time, keeping you reading until you put it all together. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
After the last book of Jewell's I read, I was interested in reading more by her, but now...I'm not sure. This was more complicated than it needed to be. I feel like she started with the twist and worked backward to get to it, but not in the best way she could have.
I spent at least half the book wondering when I would be done. So that's pretty much all you need to know.
