September, 2010

September 1st, 2010, 10:54 p.m. - She was just 17, if you know what I mean...

The Amazing Race 17 preview

September 4th, 2010, 2:47 p.m. - A bad week for nice people

Big Brother - Week nine: Aww, poor Ragan. He really didn't have a chance this week. The stupid Brigade is just too strong. I wonder which two will make it to the finals, or if Britney will manage to squeeze in there. Probably not, unfortunately. So someone will half a brain is going home with half a million dollars. Rating: 3 sock puppets

Top Chef - "Gastro-nauts": Nooooooo! Guess I'm Team Ed now. Rating: 4 annoying people rumored to be in an all-star season of the show

11:09 p.m. - Yeesh, how depressing

25. Mockingjay (Suzanne Collins)
I liked this (though not as much as the first in the trilogy), but man, if you took a drink every time someone died or Katniss needed medical treatment, you'd have alcohol poisoning.

P.S. Team Gale 4EVR!!!!1!

Up next: The Imperfectionists (Tom Rachman)

September 5th, 2010, 9:52 p.m. - Sometimes I find awesome pictures for my recaps

"Mob Rules"

September 7th, 2010, 10:56 p.m. - Eh...

26. The Imperfectionists (Tom Rachman)
I thought this was...okay. Just okay. (Yeah, I read it in three days, so I did like parts of it, but still.) I don't get what all the fuss is about. It's written well, but I've read better. Arthur's chapter, however, was terrific, and I think his and Ornella's will stay with me for a while.

Up next: Room (Emma Donoghue)

September 8th, 2010, 10:42 p.m. - The craziness begins yet again

"High-Fashion Histrionics"

September 9th, 2010, 9:21 p.m. - I want to hang out with J Alexander all the time

Big Brother - Week ten: As I said when I live-tweeted this week, when there's more drama in the jury house than in the show house, there's a problem. Rating: 3 satisfactory smacks into a wall

America's Next Top Model - "Welcome to High Fashion": Early stand-outs (for good reasons): Chelsey and Liz. I also kind of liked Kendal and Jane. People who can leave right now: Kacey and Lexie. I have no preference as to which leaves first. Rating: 4 diaries no one was called out for reading

Top Chef - "Finale, Part 1": What's with so few female chefs ever making it to the finals on this show? Whatever, because Tiffany should still be there. I see Kevin as a long shot, Angelo as a possibility, and Ed as the probable winner, which I can live with. I haven't liked a winner since Stephanie, which is pathetic. Supposedly they're doing an all-star competition next season, though, so Tiffany gets a second chance! Rating: 3 woks Kevin apparently has no access to

September 12th, 2010, 9:47 p.m. - This clip show didn't make anyone look good. Except Zingbot

"Déjà View"

September 14th, 2010, 8:16 p.m. - Oh, you know we're all wrong

Survivor roundtable

September 18th, 2010, 1:50 p.m. - That $25,000 Britney won is going to go to good use, since her house just burned down

Big Brother - The finale: So much filler! So little caring! Rating: 3 keys Julie put in the wrong place. Like I said in my live-tweeting, you have ONE job to do, Julie!

America's Next Top Model - "Diane von Furstenberg": Oh, shut up and eat a sandwich, Anamaria. I'm so glad she was the first one out. I wouldn't have been able to put up with her for more than an episode. I was very impressed with Kayla, who I had a hard time telling apart from Chelsey before now, and I'm not at all surprised that Ann, easily the most awkward of all the girls, did so well, because that's always how it is. It will be interesting to see how everyone evolves over the season. At this point I just don't have a feel for who the front-runner is and who will end up being the strongest overall. Rating: 4 girls' names I still don't know

Survivor - "Young at Heart": Way to go down in flames, Wendy. That was pretty impressive. On this show, it's almost always better to just keep your mouth shut so someone else will look stupid instead. Rating: 3 Medallions of Power that La Flor was incredibly stupid to give up

5:08 p.m. - Just like Mary Poppins...

27. Room (Emma Donoghue)
...Practically perfect in every way.

I actually have a lot to say about this book, but no idea where to start. If I were still in school, I'd want to write a thesis on it. There's just so much there. It's one of those books I want to recommend to everyone I know, and even people I don't know.

Up next: Skippy Dies (Paul Murray)

September 23rd, 2010, 6:21 p.m. - I subbed for Survivor last night and it was AWESOME

"'I Don't Like Her, But She's Just Awesome'"

September 25th, 2010, 12:18 p.m. - I guess it's officially fall!

House - "Now What": A little boring in parts, but still better than a majority of what we saw last season. I think the House/Cuddy relationship is going to be a lot of fun. I liked that the patient of the week was a fellow doctor, and the format was a little different from what we usually see - instead of starting the episode with a person getting sick and following that thread for the whole episode, we didn't meet the patient until later, and the House/Cuddy plot took the forefront. I like when the show does something new. Rating: 3 toad eggs

How I Met Your Mother - "Big Days": Just like House, somewhat boring but still better than a lot of last season. To me the highlight of the episode was Robin. I do like that in different weeks, different characters amuse me the most. That tells me this show truly is an ensemble comedy. Rating: 3 pickles that would have helped that sandwich

The Event - "Pilot": A lot of people thought this show was ridiculous and a waste of time, but I really liked the pilot. The terrific cast was one of the reasons I was drawn to try it out, and they didn't disappoint. I was especially impressed with Scott Patterson, who never once made me think anything like, "Why is he flying a plane? Luke Danes doesn't fly planes!" I can't promise I'll stick with the show all season, and I don't know how they can keep up this pace the whole time, but I'm definitely with it for the time being. Rating: 4 bicycles left in the rain

Glee - "Audition": A very uneven episode, to me, and not helped by horrible acting from Charice. I loved the new coach, though. I like when someone stands up to Sue. I just hope the show doesn't devolve into special-guest-star-of-the-week schtick, because that's not why I started watching. Rating: 3 awesome video interviews

America's Next Top Model - "Patricia Field": I figured Sara wouldn't last very long; she was one of the girls with the least amount of personality. Kayla impresses me more and more each week, and at this point this competition might be hers to lose. I think Chelsey might be a dark horse - even though she didn't nail her word in the angel shoot (okay, that was a weird sentence...), I liked her photo more than anyone else's. Rating: 4 horrible hairstyles poor Kayla is saddled with (but is working anyway)

Survivor - "Fatigue Makes Cowards of Us All": I was so, so happy I got to recap this episode. It was so entertaining from beginning to end - and this was just the second episode of the season! (By the way, the RNO writers keep calling each other "baby" thanks to the way Shannon addressed Teeuwynn in the interview she did with him.) The best part was that the entertainment didn't come from just one person, but from half a dozen of them. If this keeps up, this season will be awesome. Rating: 5 pairs of $1,600 alligator shoes

Grey's Anatomy - "With You I'm Born Again": So if Alex and Lexie are over, does that mean she'll get back together with Mark? I liked them together. And he obviously still cares about her. This episode was kind of an elaboration on last season's premiere, with everyone expressing grief over George's death in a different way. Only this goes deeper, since this stems from a more traumatic event and affects so many more people. A great start to what I hope is a great season. Rating: 4 bridal magazines Cristina would rather read than observe weird surgeries

The Office - "Nepotism": Really, Pam? That was your brilliant plan? Lame. You'd think she'd be better at pranks, considering who she's married to. Let's hope Cecilia inherits pranking genes from her father, not her mother. Rating: 3 opening musical sequences that kind of made me feel like I was on drugs

September 29th, 2010, 8:44 a.m. - Oops, I totally forgot!

"Have Fun Storming the Castle!"
