September, 2016

September 2nd, 2016, 8:03 p.m. - Now I'm thinking I should reread The Nobodies Album

24. Harmony (Carolyn Parkhurst)
I've been waiting for a new Parkhurst book for years, and I wasn't disappointed. Now how long do I have to wait for another one?

Up next: You Will Know Me (Megan Abbott)

September 3rd, 2016, 1:24 p.m. - How is Cisco not horribly injured?

Mr. Robot – "eps2.7init5.fve": The second half of the season is a lot better than the first. Let's wrap things up with a lot of action, shall we? And also with Trenton being completely fine, please, because I won't be happy if she's not. Rating: 4 videotapes

September 10th, 2016, 1:31 p.m. - I thought more might happen with only a couple episodes left...

Mr. Robot – "eps2.8h1dden-pr0cess.axx": So we had no questions really answered this week...and nothing really happened...and hardly anyone interesting got to do anything. Good show! Rating: 3 phones

September 13th, 2016, 8:17 p.m. - I really should have read this during the Olympics

25. You Will Know Me (Megan Abbott)
I was tentative about this book, thanks to all the hype it's gotten, but it completely lived up to it. I was also hesitant because I've tried and failed at least three times to read Abbott's Dare Me. This book feels like it was written by a different person.

Up next: The Nix (Nathan Hill)

September 24th, 2016, 1:29 p.m. - "I have what doctors call directional insanity. I once got lost on an escalator"

The Big Bang Theory – "The Conjugal Conjecture": Too many guest stars. Katey Sagal didn't even get to be funny. Disappointing. But Jack McBrayer was, as always, wonderful. Rating: 3 wedding dresses that were at least nice

The Good Place – "Pilot"/"Flying"/"Tahani Al Jamil": Loved it! Kristen Bell is always fantastic, Ted Danson is really fun here, and William Jackson Harper is perfect in his role. This is very, very promising. Rating: 4 plants that sometimes catch fire

Brooklyn Nine-Nine – "Coral Palms Pt. 1": Interesting that they would take the risk of doing an episode with just Jake and Holt, but it paid off. And I'm happy that they're giving us a taste of the two of them in Florida, which was exactly what I wanted. The next thing I want is more Maya Rudolph. Rating: 4 hot dog costumes

Scream Queens – "Scream Again": We're off to a bit of a slow start, but I'm optimistic that things will step up, especially when Chad comes back. Chad, Chad, he's our man! If he can't entertain me, no one can! Rating: 3 razors

Speechless – "P-I-Pilot": I took a chance on this, and I liked it. The actor playing Ray is really, really good, and I'm excited to see John Ross Bowie outside of his Big Bang Theory role. I do hope they tone down Minnie Driver's character, though. That's going to get old fast. Rating: 4 wheelchair/garbage ramps

Modern Family – "A Tale of Three Cities": Eh. That's all. Just eh. Rating: 3 magicians suspended in Jell-o

September 30th, 2016, 8:02 p.m. - "You want me to tell him that you nodded lightly?" "He'll know what it means"

The Big Bang Theory – "The Military Miniaturization": This is why you don't let Sheldon be in the room when big decisions are being made. You'd think the guys would get that by now. Rating: 3 lawsuits Bernadette should ABSOLUTELY file if she doesn't get a promotion because she's pregnant

Brooklyn Nine-Nine – "Coral Palms Pt. 2": Equally great stuff from both the regular cast and the guest stars. Jim O'Heir should be in more things. And Maya Rudolph should be in ALL THE THINGS. Rating: 5 buckets of bullets

Scream Queens – "Warts and All": Thanks a lot, Ryan Murphy, for casting Colton Haynes and then not letting us see his beautiful face. You're so mean. Rating: 3 killer hands

Speechless – "N-E-New A-I-Aide": This really is a solid, consistently good show. It doesn't feel like there's a weak link anywhere. I'm glad I decided to watch it. Rating: 4 pizzas

Modern Family – "A Stereotypical Day": Interesting that they cast a trans child actor as a trans character and then never used the word "trans." Just...very interesting. Rating: 4 Tic Tacs

The Good Place – "Jason Mendoza": Making Jianyu (sorry – Jason) a fraud as well was a brilliant move. Poor Chidi, though. How does he handle this craziness? Rating: 4 blocks of tofu
