25. Beyond Reach (Karin Slaughter)
That said...guts. Slaughter has guts.
Anyway, I've liked Slaughter's entire Grant County series, and this was a typical entry for her. I didn't even hate Lena! (I know! I'm surprised, too!) And until her next thriller, I'll be sad, but I'll also get over it and read something else and wait patiently to see what happens next.
Up next: The Glass Castle (Jeannette Walls)

August 29th, 2007, 6:01 p.m. - Please pack your knives and go...somewhere else
No Top Chef tonight. As much as I like recapping, I also like nights where I get a break. It's like coming home from school without homework.
To the chick who tried to cut in line in front of me at Panera, then acted rude about it, and who I later found out had double-parked behind me, causing me to take twice as long to get back to my office as it should have: Hi. Um, you're an idiot.
I didn't realize how mixed the reviews for this book were until I just clicked onto Amazon to get the link. Wow, some people are a little too upset over the death of a fictional character. It's not like Slaughter killed Harry Potter (hey, that rhymes). Yeah, it was sad (hence the "waaaaah!"), but...take a deep breath, go drink some iced tea, and remember it's JUST A BOOK. It's called a plot twist, people. They happen. They keep things interesting. They're NOT REAL. Chill.
Walls and her brother and sisters grew up poor. No, really poor. Like the definition of "dirt poor." Their clueless parents (an alcoholic father and self-absorbed mother with no sense of the value of a dollar) pretty much left them to their own devices, but the kids were so intelligent and resourceful they were able to successfully raise themselves. I wouldn't wish Walls' childhood on my worst enemy, but she and her siblings learned so much from their struggles that you can tell they were set for the rest of their lives. The book is kind of like a fairy tale, except the parents are the villains, which makes it even more chilling.
