"Bring on the Night"
Written by Marti Noxon and Doug Petrie; directed by David Grossman

Xander cleans up the Summers’ living room, lamenting the fact that the Scoobies seem to be constantly cleaning up the house. Anya and Willow research the First Evil but can’t find any information. Anya mentions that Andrew was talking about a seal. Dawn attempts to awaken a passed out Andrew with the ever-popular punching method but Buffy tells her that research is more important. Buffy asks for the Watcher’s Codex and looks up to see Joyce handing it to her. She says that Joyce is the First; Joyce tells her that she needs to rest if she wants to be able to beat “this thing.” She tells her to wake up and Buffy awakens to hear Xander saying the same thing. He asks what she saw in her dream and Buffy tells him it was nothing.

The vampire from the seal (aka the Übervamp) drags Spike across the basement floor and the First enters the room in the guise of Spike. The First soon morphs into Drusilla, who watches as the Übervamp kicks Spike. Back at the Summers’ house Anya and Dawn splash water in Andrew’s face but he remains unconscious. Dawn suggests hot water but the science experiment is interrupted when Buffy enters. Andrew wakes up and Buffy informs him that if he doesn’t tell them what they need to know, they’ll let the First have its way with him. Andrew leads Buffy, Xander, and Dawn through the school basement to the seal. He tells them that he’s not sure what the seal does exactly because he wasn’t able to open it. They realize that another sacrifice was made and the seal may have been opened. Andrew promises that he had nothing to do with it but Xander doesn’t find him trustworthy, considering he killed his best friend. Andrew claims that Jonathan told him he was at peace but Xander tells him that he was tricked.

Buffy decides that they need to rebury the seal and they get to work. On their way out they run into Wood, who’s carrying his shovel. Buffy lies that she’s feeling better and Wood lies that he found the shovel in the courtyard. Buffy and Dawn concoct a story about burying a time capsule, but Wood seems suspicious. Willow prepares to perform a locator spell to find the First, but her ingredients begin to glow and Willow appears to be possessed. In a deep voice she announces, “You only make me stronger!” Xander shatters the bowl she was using, breaking the spell, but Willow says that she still feels whatever was there inside her. Afraid that she’ll hurt someone, she begs Buffy not to make her use magic again and Buffy agrees. As Buffy is about to leave to seek out the First, Giles arrives at the house with three girls in tow. “Sorry to barge in,” he says. “We have a slight apocalypse.”

Giles explains that the three girls - Annabelle, Molly (Clara Bryant), and Kennedy (Iyari Limon) - are potential slayers. There used to be many more of them, but now only a few are left, and they’re all on their way to Sunnydale. Buffy realizes that the girls she was dreaming about were potential slayers who were murdered by the First’s Harbingers. Robson, the man that Giles found after he was attacked in “Sleeper,” was a Watcher, one of the many who were also killed. The Scoobies realize that the First wants to wipe out all potential Slayers and their Watchers, then kill Faith and Buffy.

Giles explains that the First predates written history, which is why all attempts to research it have failed. The only records on the First were in the Council’s library, which was blown up. Giles has brought some records with him, having stolen them when he first realized that something was going on. Anya accuses him of blowing up the Council Headquarters, which Giles denies, saying that the Harbingers must be to blame. He says that the First can change form, taking the identity of any person who has died, but that it can’t take corporeal form. It is the source of all evil, has endless resources, and wants to get rid of any guardian of the Hellmouth. He tells Buffy that she is the only hope to protect the Hellmouth. Kennedy suggests the well-known running away idea, but Buffy says that they can fight the First if they can get Spike back. First!Drusilla continues to torture Spike, assuring him that it’s far from over for him.

Buffy and Giles discuss their first experience with the First, in “Amends,” and Buffy wishes that Giles could visit when the world isn’t about to end. Andrew asks about the perks involved with being a Scooby while Willow and the potentials try to figure out sleeping arrangements. Apparently Kennedy is a lesbian, but let’s move on. Buffy and Giles head to the Christmas tree lot where she found the Harbingers before; Buffy falls through the ground into a cave. She encounters the Übervamp, who, to her surprise, doesn’t turn to dust when she stakes him. He matches her fighting skills and she can only escape because he can’t go into the sun. At home, Giles explains to her and the potentials that she encountered a Turok-Han, a primordial vampire that was supposedly part of a mythical race. (Apparently he was mythtaken.) He says that Turok-Han are “the vampires that vampires fear.” He believes that the Turok-Han (or Übervamp, which is more fun) is working for the First.

Rather than sleep, Buffy decides to research the First the way that any young adult would - via the Internet. She plugs “evil” into a search engine and is disheartened to be met with 900,517 results. She tries “manifestations of evil,” then, having been espied by Wood, adds “in the movies.” He hints to her that he’s seen “true evil” and tells her that he likes mysteries because he enjoys “finding out what's underneath it all at the very end.” Spike’s torture continues, and First!Drusilla is annoyed to hear that Spike thinks the real Dru is crazier. First!Drusilla tries to win Spike over to the dark side but he replies, “Get bent.” Of course, this doesn’t halt the torture.

In the school bathroom, Buffy again sees Joyce and tells her that she has to make sure everyone is safe. Joyce replies that evil is “a part of us. All of us. It's natural. And no one can stop that. No one can stop nature, not even--.” Buffy suddenly awakens at her desk, having fallen asleep in the middle of a counseling session. At the Summers’ house, the Scoobies try to prepare the nervous potentials for battle. Willow tells Buffy that she wishes she could help but Buffy assures her that everything will be okay. Kennedy requests weapons, and at first Buffy is skeptical but then agrees that the potentials should be armed. Andrew asks to be untied, in case he needs to defend himself (or, more likely, run), but he is denied freedom. Just as Buffy and Giles prepare to head out for the fight, Molly announces that Annabelle has run off.

Indeed, Annabelle is running her little heart out down a street in Sunnydale when the Übervamp grabs her. Buffy comes upon her a little later, but she’s already dead. The Übervamp takes off after Buffy, who runs and attempts to hide in a factory. They fight, the Übervamp gets the better of her, and she winds up under a collapses concrete wall. The Scoobies find her and take her home. First!Drusilla again tells Spike that the end is not near for him. He replies that he is certain Buffy will find him because she believes in him. At the Summers’ house, Buffy listens to the Scoobies discuss her condition, which isn’t good. They realize that she was their only plan, and that if she can’t fight, they have no hope. Buffy, however, assures them that she won’t back down, no matter what. She announces that they have just formed an army, and that they will beat the First, because they’re stronger than evil.

MORAL, or CRAMMING COMPLEX ISSUES INTO A NUTSHELL: If you think Kennedy’s annoying now, just wait.

GRADE: C+ It's good to see Giles again, but it's his fault we have to deal with the potentials.

MEMORABLE QUOTES - Xander: “It's a loop...like the Mummy Hand. I'm doomed to replace these windows for all eternity.”

Buffy: “It claimed to be the original evil, the one that came before anything else.”
Anya: “Please, how many times have I heard that line in my demon days? ‘I'm so rotten, they don't even have a word for it. I'm bad. Baddy bad bad bad. Does it make you horny?’ Or terrified. Whatever.”

Buffy: “But if you don't tell us what we need to know, then I'm gonna offer you to The First on a platter and let him chop you into tiny pieces.”
Andrew: “The first what?”
Anya: “The name of the evil thing that pretended to be Warren to get you to kill Jonathan.”
Andrew: “Oh, not very ominous sounding.”
Dawn: “No, i-it is if you understand the context.”
Andrew: “No, an evil name should be like Lex or Voldemort or--.”
Buffy: “Hey, I was intimidating here.”
Andrew: “Oh, sorry. Um, go ahead.”

“There's blood on this. Lots. Looks like the First made another sacrifice. Or a music video.” - Dawn, upon seeing the seal

Buffy: “We need more muscle. That's why we need to find Spike.”
Anya: “Yeah, he'll help. You know, if he's not crazy or off killing people or dead. Or, you know, all of the above.”

Andrew: “So, how long have you followed Buffy?”
Xander: “I don't follow her. She's my best friend.”
Andrew: “Huh. She seems like a good leader. Her hair is shiny. Does she make you stab things?”

Wood: “You're searching for evil movies?”
Buffy: “Uh, I know it's not the all-time most kosher use of my office hours, um, but, you know, looking at some down time. And what can I say, I just love those evil, evil movies. Like Exorcist, you know, Blair Witch….”
Wood: “Hmm. As opposed to Rob Schneider's oeuvre.”

“Are you worried about the sun going down? Because there's some things you can't control. The sun always goes down, the sun always comes up.” - Joyce to Buffy

Xander: “Hey, junior slayers, don't look so worried. I mean, sure, we don't know where Spike is, or how to fight The First, or if and when the super style vampire is gonna attack us all. However, house - boarded up. No all we gotta do is trap this Übervamp in a pantry, and it's game over.”
Willow: “Xander, newbies. Let's ease them in to the whole ‘jokes in the face of death’ thing.”
Xander: “Who's joking? That pantry thing could work. Are you saying M. Night Shyamalan lied to us?”

“But I'm like Vader in the last 5 minutes of Jedi with redemptive powers minus a redemptive struggle of epic redemption which chronicles…. (sigh) These ropes itch.” - Andrew

Buffy: “You're right. We don't know how to fight it. We don't know when it'll come. We can't run, can't hide, can't pretend it's not the end, 'cause it is. Something's always been there to try and destroy the world. We've beaten them back, but we're not dealing with them anymore. We're dealing with the reason they exist. Evil. The strongest. The First.”
Giles: “Buffy, I - I-I know you're tired.”
Buffy: “I'm beyond tired. I'm beyond scared. I'm standing on the mouth of hell, and it is gonna swallow me whole. And it'll choke on me. We're not ready? They're not ready. They think we're gonna wait for the end to come, like we always do. I'm done waiting. They want an apocalypse? Oh, we'll give 'em one. Anyone else who wants to run, do it now. 'Cause we just became an army. We just declared war. From now on, we won't just face our worst fears, we will seek them out. We will find them, and cut out their hearts one by one, until The First shows itself for what it really is. And I'll kill it myself. There is only one thing on this earth more powerful than evil, and that's us. Any questions?”
