"What’s My Line, Part 2"
Written by Marti Noxon; directed by David Semel

Buffy and Kendra are still facing off as they were at the end of “What’s My Line, Part 1.” Kendra repeats that she’s the Slayer, but Buffy doesn’t believe her, which is understandable, considering the fact that she’s supposed to be the Chosen One. Kendra denies that Buffy is the Slayer, and, fed up, Buffy calls a truce. Kendra says that her Watcher sent her to Sunnydale to kill vampires. Meanwhile, Angel is still at death’s door in Willy’s bar, proving that Kendra takes her job seriously. Buffy takes Kendra to the library to meet Giles, who has heard of her Watcher. Kendra nearly attacks Willow, not understanding that Buffy has friends who know that she’s the Slayer. Giles realizes that Kendra can be a Slayer because Buffy was technically dead for a few minutes (see “Prophecy Girl”).

Buffy says that Kendra isn’t needed in Sunnydale and should go home, but Kendra says that a “dark power” is going to rise in Sunnydale and she’s supposed to be around to help. Buffy asks why Kendra attacked her and Kendra says that she thought Buffy with a vampire. She points out that Buffy was kissing a vampire and Buffy explains that Angel isn’t evil. She senses that Kendra has done something and demands to know what happened. Willy drags Angel out of his cage and into another room. He drops him through a trap door into a sewer, where Spike meets them. Spike pays Willy for his trouble and takes Angel away. Cordelia talks to Norman about cosmetics (see “What’s My Line, Part 1”) and notices a worm crawling on him. Xander returns to the living room in time to see another worm. He and Cordelia make a run for it just as Norman explodes into a bunch of worms. Because he can reassemble himself and move quickly, Norman catches up to them and they are forced to hide out in the basement, putting tape over the crack at the bottom of the door.

Buffy and Kendra go to the back room of Willy’s bar and note that there are no ashes in the cage, which means that Angel is still alive. They ask Willy where Angel is, and he tells them that he went to hide out underground. Kendra suggests that she and Buffy return to Giles for orders, but Buffy replies that she doesn’t take orders. Spike brings Angel to Drusilla, giving the exposition that that night, during the full moon, they will kill Angel to cure Dru. Drusilla asks to play with her sire until the ritual, then calls Angel a “bad daddy.” Back at school, Giles tells Kendra that she’s allowed to stay in Sunnydale until they figure out what’s going on with Spike and Dru. Giles fills Kendra in on the Order of Taraka, and they begin to discuss the assassins, who Kendra has read about. She says that she’s required to study by the Slayer handbook, which Buffy and Willow didn’t know existed. Giles and Kendra talk shop, and Giles tells Buffy that Snyder was looking for her; Kendra is surprised that Buffy attends high school. Buffy mocks Giles and Kendra, admitting to Willow that she thinks Giles would prefer it if she were as studious as Kendra. She wonders what it would be like if she let Kendra take over as Slayer and lived her life the way she wants to.

In the basement, Xander and Cordelia start picking on each other. Xander tells Cordelia that they should wait for Buffy to save them, but she’s worried that that will take too long. She starts to head upstairs to see if Norman is gone, but Xander stops her. They start yelling at each other, then wind up kissing, literally accompanied by violins. “We so need to get outta here,” Xander says. They decide to take a chance and start to leave the house, but before they can get out, worms fall onto Cordelia from the ceiling. She and Xander run out into the yard, where he sprays her with a hose. They jump into her car and speed off. On their way to career day activities, Buffy notes that Oz is checking Willow out. Willow replies that he’s just “expressing computer nerd solidarity,” but Buffy tells her that he’s on his way over. They talk about their recruitment by the software company and he tells her that his main ambition in life is to master the E-flat diminished ninth chord on his guitar.

The law enforcement recruiter calls roll and, when she learns who Buffy is, tries to shoot her. Buffy struggles with the officer as the gun goes off. Oz pulls Willow out of the way, but takes a bullet in the arm. Buffy and Kendra fight the officer, who briefly takes Jonathan hostage, then escapes with Kendra in pursuit. Oz describes being shot as “odd! And painful.” Later, in the library, the Scoobies exposit that Oz is okay and that the officer was definitely a member of the Order of Taraka. Xander and Cordelia return and are introduced to Kendra. They tell the others about their encounter with the assassin and Buffy mocks Xander for being involved with another bug person (see “Teacher’s Pet”). Giles announces that he knows what Spike needs to cure Drusilla, and that the assassins must have been sent to stop Buffy from interfering with the ritual. Buffy replies that Angel is Dru’s sire, and is upset to hear that the ritual will kill him. The Scoobies agree that they need to find Angel, but Kendra says that they should be focusing on stopping the ritual. Buffy tells her that she can either work with them or stay out of their way, and Kendra agrees to help. Buffy says that Spike can do whatever he wants, but no one messes with her boyfriend.

Drusilla talks to Angel in her room, torturing him with holy water and stories of her family. Giles and Willow research; Giles is surprised to learn that there are 43 churches in Sunnydale. Buffy and Kendra deal with weapons in Giles’ office, and Kendra, who claims to be a weapons expert, accidentally breaks a lamp with a crossbow. Xander finds a picture of the bug assassin and states that he can only be killed when he’s in bug form. Kendra tells Buffy that Buffy’s life is full of things that Kendra was taught are distractions. She says that she doesn’t remember her family because she was sent to her Watcher at such a young age, and that “emotions are weakness.” Buffy disagrees that emotions can be beneficial. She says that Kendra is the perfect fighter in a technical sense, but that she can’t improvise. Buffy suddenly realizes that Willy might prove helpful after all.

Spike starts to take Angel to a church for the ritual, and Angel takes the opportunity to mock him about Drusilla. He says that Spike and Dru don’t have the “fire” that he himself had with her. Spike gets angry and comes close to staking Angel, but stops when he realizes that Angel wants him to kill him so that he can’t cure Dru and wreak havoc with her. Buffy and Kendra return to Willy’s and ask about the ritual; he tells them that he’ll take them to it. Kendra gets frustrated with Buffy, who she thinks only wants to save Angel, and says that she is a fool for not wanting to kill a vampire. Buffy follows Willy to the church, where she comes face to face with the assassins. Elsewhere in the church, Spike begins the ritual, which involves Angel and Dru being chained together and having a sword stabbed through their hands. Willy brings Buffy in and Spike grows furious, saying that he wanted her dead, not at the church. He summons the fake police officer, but Kendra arrives to save the day.

Buffy fights the cop while Kendra fights Spike. Giles and Willow battle another vamp as Xander and Cordelia summon Norman, wait until he’s turned into bugs, and stomp on him with glue. Buffy and Kendra switch so that Buffy can face off with Spike. He spots Willy trying to escape and, as he grabs him, Buffy runs over to help Angel. Spike goes after her again and Willy runs off. The cop tears Kendra’s only shirt, ticking her off and making her throw the cop into an organ. Spike sets the church on fire, grabs Dru, and heads out of the church. Buffy grabs a censer and throws it at Spike, hitting him and making him and Dru fall into the organ, which collapses on top of them. Kendra watches as Buffy helps Angel out, and the Scoobies leave.

At school the next day, Willow tries to thank Oz for saving her, but he tells her he gets embarrassed by thank yous. They discuss animal crackers, and Oz shares his belief that all monkeys are French. Xander pulls Cordelia aside and they bicker about who initiated the kiss in the basement. After angrily agreeing that nothing will ever happen again, they share another kiss. Buffy walks Kendra to a cab and tells her to enjoy her flight home, but not to watch the movie if it has “a dog or Chevy Chase.” She thanks Kendra for her help with Angel, and Kendra decides not to tell her Watcher that they helped a vampire. She admonishes Buffy for talking about slaying as if it’s her job, saying that it’s who Buffy is. Buffy is slightly pleased now that she’s not the only person with the responsibility of being a Slayer. At the church, Drusilla emerges from the ruins of the organ holding Spike, and promising that he’ll soon be strong again, like her.

MORAL, or CRAMMING COMPLEX ISSUES INTO A NUTSHELL: Career day is helpful, but deadly. Like the mafia!

GRADE: B Kendra bugs me, but I love the Xander/Cordelia banter.

MEMORABLE QUOTES - “Back off, Pink Ranger!” - Buffy to Kendra

Kendra: (to Giles) “She died?”
Buffy: “Just a little.”

Willy: “What are you gonna do with him anyway?”
Spike: “I’m thinkin’ maybe dinner and a movie. I don’t want to rush into anything. I’ve been hurt, you know.”

Buffy: “I don’t take orders. I do things my way.”
Kendra: “No wonder you died.”

Buffy: “Wait. Handbook? What handbook? How come I don’t have a handbook?”
Willow: “Is there a T-shirt, too? ‘Cause that would be cool….”

Cordelia: “You think we should just slack here and hope that somebody else decides to be a hero? Sorry, forgot I was stranded with a LOSER!”
Xander: “And yet I never forgot that I’m stuck with the numb-brain that let Mr. Mutant in the house in the FIRST PLACE!”
Cordelia: “HE LOOKED NORMAL!”
Xander: “What, is he supposed to have an arrow with the word assassin’ over his head?! All it took was the prospect of a free makeover, and you licked his hand like a big dumb dog!”
Cordelia: “You know what? I’m going. I’d rather be worm food than look at your pathetic face!”
Xander: “Then go! I’m not stopping ya!”
Cordelia: “I bet you wouldn’t! I bet you’d let a girl go off to her doom all by herself!”
Xander: “Not just any girl. You’re special.”
Cordelia: “I can’t believe that I’m stuck spending what will probably be my last few moments on Earth here WITH YOU!”
Xander: “I hope these are my last few moments! Three more seconds with you, and I’m gonna….”
Cordelia: “I’m gonna what? Coward!”
Xander: “Moron!”
Cordelia: “I hate you!”
Xander: “I HATE YOU!”
(They kiss)
Xander: “We so need to get outta here.”

Xander: (to Kendra) “A Slayer, huh? (to Buffy) I knew this ‘I’m the only one, I’m the only one’ thing was just an attention-getter.”
Buffy: “Just say hello, Xander.”
Xander: “Welcome. So! You’re a Slayer, huh? I like that in a woman.”
Kendra: “Uh…I hope…I tank you…I mean, sir, um…I will be of service.”
Xander: “Great! Good. It’s good to be a giver.”

“Angel’s our friend! Except I don’t like him.” - Xander to Kendra

(hearing Kendra break a lamp with a crossbow) Giles: “Is everything all right?”
Buffy: “Yeah, it’s okay. Kendra killed the bad lamp.”

Xander: “He can only be killed when he’s in his disassembled state. Disassembled. That means when he’s broken down into his liiittle buggy parts.
Cordelia: “I know what it means, dorkhead.
Xander: “Dorkhead! You slash me with your words!”

Buffy: “It’s your lucky day, Spike.”
Kendra: “Two Slayers!”
Buffy: “No waiting!”

Spike: “I’d rather be fightin’ you anyway.”
Buffy: “Mutual.”

Oz: (re: animal crackers) “Oh, look! Monkey! And he has a little hat. And little pants.”
Willow: “Yeah, I-I see!”
Oz: “The monkey’s the only cookie animal that gets to wear clothes, you know that? You have the sweetest smile I’ve ever seen. So, I’m wondering, do the other cookie animals feel sorta ripped? Like, is the hippo going, ‘Hey, man, where are my pants? I have my hippo dignity!’ And you know the monkey’s just, (with a French accent) ‘I mock you with my monkey pants!’ And there’s a big coup in the zoo.”
Willow: “The monkey is French?”
Oz: “All monkeys are French. You didn’t know that?”
